Apple Introduces iPhone 5S

Apple introduced its latest iPhones during a media event held at its Cupertino campus. In addition to new high-end iPhone 5S models, Apple also announced that it is going to be releasing new iPhone 5C models that start at $100 less in the United States.

The new iPhone 5S models start at $199 for 16GB and come in three colors – White, Silver, and Space Gray. While largely similar to last year’s iPhone 5, the new models bring improvements to Camera and battery life in addition to a new Fingerprint sensor.

The Fingerprint sensor is integrated to the home screen and can be used to sign in to the iPhone without having to type in a password. The technology can also be used to make purchases from the iTunes store using fingerprints for authentication.

Another significant new feature in the iPhone 5S is a move to 64-bit architecture with the new custom A7 chip. Also new is an M7 “motion coprocessor” chip that will have use mainly in fitness applications.

The colorful iPhone 5C retains the iPhone 5 design with a glass front screen but with the metallic back replaced by plastic. Available colors are white, pink, yellow, blue, or green. Each will cost $99 for 16GB and $199 for 32GB.

Apple says iPhone 5C will be available for pre-order Friday, September 13, and iPhone 5S will be available for order a week later on the 20th.

Apple also announced that iO7, the latest version of its mobile operating system will be released to the world on September 18. All new iPhone models will come pre-installed with iOS7.

If past history is anything to go by, the popularity of the iPhone ever since its introduction in 2007 will bring out long lines at Apple Stores and a huge number of pre-orders online.
